ESP32 flash / flash_erase - Invalid head of packet

Postby wupperpi » Sun Nov 24, 2019 4:39 pm

Hallo,
actually I've some problems to run several commands (flash, flash_erase). The ESP32-WROOM is soldered on a breakoutboard. If I
run flash, program is terminating with Invalid head of packet after some writing on the Chip (baudrate 115200). The output is:
Serial port COM10
Connecting........_
Detecting chip type... ESP32
Chip is ESP32D0WDQ6 (revision 1)
Features: WiFi, BT, Dual Core, 240MHz, VRef calibration in efuse, Coding Scheme None
Crystal is 40MHz

Wrote 24752 bytes (14767 compressed) at 0x00001000 in 1.3 seconds (effective 149.2 kbit/s)...

A fatal error occurred: Timed out waiting for packet header
esptool.py failed with exit code 2
There is more appaering a liittle strange. The output of esptool chip_id is:
Serial port COM10
Connecting........
Detecting chip type... ESP32
Chip is ESP32D0WDQ6 (revision 1)

Warning: ESP32 has no Chip ID. Reading MAC instead.
MAC: 24:6f:28:21:e7:54
Hard resetting via RTS pin...
But why is here no chip-ID ?
And the output of esptool flash_id is:
Serial port COM10
Connecting....
Detecting chip type... ESP32
Chip is ESP32D0WDQ6 (revision 1)
Features: WiFi, BT, Dual Core, 240MHz, VRef calibration in efuse, Coding Scheme None

Manufacturer: 00

Detected flash size: Unknown
Hard resetting via RTS pin...
But why is Detected flash size: Unknown? Doesn't the modul have flash or is it corrupted? Is that the reason for "Invalid head of packet "?

Need help.
Kind regards

Hi wupperpi,

Yes, these results look very unusual. Is your ESP32 powered properly? Does the breakout board include a 3.3V supply with a decent current capacity, and enough power supply capacitance also on the board? (At least the capacitors shown on the WROOM module datasheet.)

Can you please also post the output from "espefuse.py summary"?

Hi Angus,
thank you for the response.
The environment has been:
- Windows 10
- breakout board only with the modul
- powersypply by laboratory power supply and AMS117 3V3 voltage regulator
- FTDI-Adapter FTDI1332
Unfortunatly it looks like modul has broken. The response of espfuse.py summary ist

Same error-message if I try esptool chip_id or flash_id now. Same on LINUX-Ubuntu.
So thank you for your suggestions. But I'll stop working with that board.
