Getting my own hostname from mDNS - how?

I would like to register a number of devices with mDNS with the same base name (like MYDEVICE) and have it assign the uniques, like MYDEVICE002 and so on. My understanding is that mDNS will do this.
However, I have no idea how to get the result! I know what I asked for, but what's my hostname when it's assigned? I tried mDNS.hostname(0) but that comes back as a blank string.
So simple, and yet...
