ESP32 as 'dump' wifi dongle over sdio

Postby a.muzyka » Mon Dec 04, 2017 2:35 pm

Hi all,

I wanted to figure out whether is possible to use ESP32 as wifi dongle over SDIO or not. The main idea is to connect ESP32 to the more powerful platform with embedded Linux and force ESP to work as a 'dump' wifi dongle. The best interface could be SDIO since it is much faster than UART.
I found something like this but without any answer:

The general problem is to find/develop firmware for ESP32 and Linux kernel drivers which can handle that case.
Did anyone hear about any projects (or esp-idf support) which support wifi over SDIO?

Hi Adrian, did you check http://espressif.com/sites/default/file ... eet_en.pdf ?
It was designed with the application you describe in mind. If you like it I can send you the drivers etc.

I'm interested in this also - specifically for the LR 802.11 mode available in the ESP32 - I'd like to use it as a long range WiFi radio on an embedded project. It says right on the front of the ESP32 product page -

"ESP32 can perform as a complete standalone system or as a slave device to a host MCU, reducing communication stack overhead on the main application processor. ESP32 can interface with other systems to provide Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functionality through its SPI / SDIO or I2C / UART interfaces."

But there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of information as to how this is possible. Can anyone shed some light on this? It would be much appreciated!
