too much io_mux too complicated, sometime just need more pins as a general MCU.
PLAN IN THE FUTURE?

Yes, we'll have more GPIOs. Muxing in the current ESP32 is somewhat complicated to get both the option to route 95% of all functions to any pin you want, but also allow fast, analog and generally 'weird' signals to get out of the chip without being impeded by the limits the GPIO mux has.
